Call for Artists: Utility Box Public Art Project

Bring Westlock's story to life - one utility box at a time.

The Town of Westlock is transforming everyday infrastructure into vibrant public art, and we want your creativity at the heart of it! We're inviting Alberta-based artists to submit original designs for our Utility Box Public Art Project.

Selected designs will be turned into eye-catching vinyl wraps and installed on utility boxes across the community—adding colour, storytelling, and local pride to our streetscapes.

    What We're Looking For:

    We’re seeking original artwork that:

    • Celebrates Westlock’s people, places, and stories

    • Highlights our agricultural roots, community spirit, and local heritage

    • Adds vibrancy and creativity to public spaces

Whether you're an emerging or established artist, we welcome your vision.

    Artist Honorarium

Each selected design will receive a $500 honorarium.  Multiple designs may be chosen per artist.

    Eligibility

This call is open to all Alberta-based artists.  We encourage applications from artists of all backgrounds and experience levels. Artists will collaborate with the Town to prepare their final artwork for print and installation.

    How to Apply

To submit your designs, send the following to planning@westlock.ca by June 27, 2025 at 4:30 p.m. MST:

    1. Up to three (3) artwork submissions in JPG, PNG, PDF, or GIF format

    2. A brief artist bio or CV

    3. A short design statement for each piece, explaining how it reflects the project themes

Full submission guidelines and project information can be found in the full Call for Artists PDF.

    About the Project

Part of the Town's Public Art Master Plan, adopted by Council in late 2024, this initiative aims to:

    • Honour Westlock's heritage and people
    • Create a strong sense of place and identity
    • Support a vibrant, welcoming community.

All selected art will be reviewed against the project guidelines in the Call for Artists and the Town's Public Art Policy.
