After an Emergency

Returning home after an emergency should only be done when it is safe to do so. Take your time and be aware of potential hazards.

Only return when emergency responders or officials confirm it is safe. Roads, utilities, and buildings may still be unsafe even if the situation appears calm.

Be alert for debris, downed power lines, damaged trees, or unstable structures. Avoid anything that looks unsafe and report hazards if needed.

Roads, bridges, and sidewalks may be weakened or washed out. Drive slowly, follow posted signage, and avoid restricted areas.

Look for visible damage such as cracks, shifting, or water intrusion. If you suspect structural damage, do not enter until it has been assessed.

If you smell gas or suspect damage to electrical or water systems, leave the area and contact the appropriate service provider. Do not attempt repairs yourself.

Take photos of your property and belongings before beginning cleanup. This will help with insurance claims or assistance programs.
