News Release: Westlock County and the Town of Westlock Launch Joint Intermunicipal Development Plan Review

WESTLOCK COUNTY AND THE TOWN OF WESTLOCK LAUNCH JOINT INTERMUNICIPAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN REVIEW

Westlock, AB - Westlock County and the Town of Westlock are pleased to announce the launch of a joint review of their Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP), reinforcing a shared commitment to collaboration, coordinated growth, and strong intermunicipal relationships.

Originally adopted in 2019, the IDP provides a framework for how the two municipalities work together on land use planning, infrastructure coordination, and development at their shared boundaries. This review will ensure the plan continues to reflect current conditions, evolving priorities, and opportunities for alignment and collaboration between the County and Town.

“Strong municipal partnerships drive growth and unlock opportunity,” said Christine Wiese, Reeve of Westlock County. “This work keeps us aligned and ready to support residents, businesses, and investment.”

“Westlock’s future is closely connected to the strength of our regional relationships,” said Jon Kramer, Mayor of the Town of Westlock. “Reviewing the Intermunicipal Development Plan together is an important way for the Town and County to stay aligned, support coordinated growth, and ensure we are planning thoughtfully for the opportunities ahead.”

The review is administrative in nature and will not change the long-term growth vision of either municipality but will ensure both municipalities are aligned in how that vision is implemented.

The review is expected to conclude in late 2026 and will include joint public hearing, where residents and stakeholders will have the opportunity to review the proposed amendments and provide feedback prior to adoption by both Councils.

This joint initiative reflects a continued commitment by Westlock County and the Town of Westlock to work collaboratively, strengthen regional relationships, and support coordinated, sustainable development across the region.
