The Land Use Bylaw (LUB) is the foundation of how development happens in Westlock. What the Land Use Bylaw Does

The Land Use Bylaw regulates:

  • Land use districts (zoning) such as residential, commercial, and industrial

  • Permitted and discretionary uses in each district

  • Development standards, including building height, lot coverage, density, and setbacks

  • Specific regulations for uses like secondary suites and home businesses or aspects of development like  landscaping, signage, and parking

  • Site design considerations, including landscaping and accessory structures

Together, these rules help shape a safe, attractive, and well-functioning community—one that supports housing diversity, economic growth, and quality of life.

Our Updated Bylaw

Westlock’s current Land Use Bylaw 2022-12 came into effect on January 1, 2023 following a comprehensive review and update. The revised bylaw reflects modern best practices, addresses key housing and development needs, and aligns with the Town’s Municipal Development Plan and Housing Action Plan.

Key outcomes of the 2022 update include:

  • Modernized land use districts to support flexibility and housing variety
  • Refined development standards to improve clarity and reduce barriers
  • Support for infill and redevelopment while protecting neighbourhood character
  • Updated regulations for parking, signage, and accessory buildings
