As part of our ongoing Housing Action Plan, the Town of Westlock offers a collection of pre-approved residential building plans to make it easier—and faster—for homeowners and builders to bring new housing to life.

These locally sourced designs are intended to simplify the design process, reduce professional service costs, and streamline the permitting experience. Whether you're developing a secondary suite, infill housing, or a new home, these plans offer a practical starting point tailored to our community's needs.

Each design has been reviewed by the Town’s Planning & Development team for compatibility with local building expectations and development goals. While the plans themselves are pre-approved, each application is site-specific - meaning setbacks, lot dimensions, zoning, and existing site features will still need to be reviewed.

Pre-approved plans simplify design—but they must still comply with land use and lot-specific requirements. Before applying:

Prepare a detailed site plan or plot plan
Ensure the proposed building fits your lot in terms of size, shape, and setbacks
For new construction, a plot plan from an Alberta Land Surveyor is required

Licensing fees are paid directly to the designer. The standard plans with no customizations start at the following rates:

Garden Suites – $675
Garage Suites – $900
Single-Detached Dwellings – $1,125 to $1,350
Semi-Detached Dwellings – $1,875 to $2,250
Row Housing – $2,800

Customizations to any design are subject to the designer’s standard rates.

Use of a pre-approved plan does not guarantee compliance with the Land Use Bylaw
All construction projects still require proper permit approvals
Property owners are responsible for ensuring suitability of the design for their lot
The Town does not provide technical support, warranties, or guarantees on the plans. All construction-related decisions and changes are between the applicant and the designer.
The Town facilitates introductions, but financial agreements are made directly between the property owner and the designer
