Building & Development

A Building Permit confirms that your construction meets the Alberta Building Code and is safe to occupy. While a Development Permit approves what can be built, a Building Permit approves how it will be built.

You may need a Building Permit if you are:

• Constructing a new building (of any use)
• Building or replacing a deck, garage, shed, or carport
• Finishing a basement or adding a secondary suite
• Completing major interior renovations that alter structure or systems
• Installing fire protection systems or structural components
• Demolishing or relocating a building

Projects that typically do not require a Building Permit include:

• Replacing flooring, cabinets, or paint
• Minor repairs that don’t affect structure, plumbing, or electrical systems

A Development Permit is often required before applying for a Building Permit. We recommend applying for both at the same time if your project needs both.

All building projects are reviewed under the Alberta Building Code and may require inspections throughout the construction process.

Safety Codes Permits are required for work involving:

• Electrical systems – new wiring, service upgrades, or major modifications
• Plumbing systems – installation or alteration of water, sanitary, or storm drainage
• Gas/Propane – appliance or line installations

As an accredited municipality, the Town provides inspection services through certified Safety Codes Officers. These permits ensure compliance with the Alberta Safety Codes Act.

Development and Building Permits must be approved before Safety Codes Permits are issued.
