Traffic Safety in Alberta

Speeding Costs Lives
  • Unsafe speed contributed to 451 deaths and over 11,700 injuries in Alberta between 2010 and 2014.

  • Motor vehicle collisions are a leading cause of head injury hospitalizations.

  • On average, 1,274 convictions occur annually for speeding more than 50 km/h over the limit.

  • Speeding fines double when passing emergency or tow vehicles with lights activated—you must slow to 60 km/h (or the posted speed, whichever is lower).

Stopping Distance Matters
At 50 km/h, it takes 37 metres to stop.
At 110 km/h, the stopping distance jumps to 126 metres.

Winter Driving Tips

  • Prepare your vehicle in the fall

  • Install four matching winter tires

  • Pack a full emergency kit

  • Check the weather and road conditions before heading out

  • Remove snow from your vehicle

  • Give yourself extra travel time

  • Avoid cruise control on icy roads

  • Always wear your seatbelt

Speeding: More Than Just a Fine

  • Nearly 1 in 4 fatal crashes involve unsafe speed

  • Even small increases over the speed limit reduce reaction time and lessen the effectiveness of safety features.

  • Demerit points for speeding range from 2 (under 15 km/h over) to 6 (over 50 km/h over)

  • Fines double in construction zones when workers are present, including those operating machinery near the roadway
